Hi guys, I’m Ricelle.
It may not look like it, but I weigh 160 lbs. That picture was taken today, February 11th 2012
I’ve been inspired by the multitude of women and men submitting their stories here. Thank you SHYB for being here. :)
This is my story:
I always looked up to my older sister. She played volleyball for 15 years, and I always dreamed to play at her level. In 5th grade, I tried out for my school’s volleyball team, and got in. My parents were extremely happy for me. As a beginner, I didn’t really understand the game, but at the time, I knew that I had all the time I needed in order to understand it a little further.
Then my family moved to the United States. I stopped playing volleyball regularly, and I gained 50 lbs in two years. I felt terrible. I hated my body. I put myself down because of it. I would wear black shirts and jeans in the summer so I wouldn’t show skin. Even my bathing suit was black! I was called “fat” and “ugly” all throughout middle school, and I wanted it to stop.

The summer before high school, I told myself to make little changes. I started to run everyday so I can prepare myself for the volleyball try outs at my school. My parents put me in a volleyball camp that helped me refine my volleyball skills further. That summer, I lost 20 lbs and I made starting setter on the JV volleyball team. I was happy.

I’m here to tell you, just do what makes you happy. Why would you stop and listen to what other people have to say? If you do what makes you happy, then you’re gonna have a more positive outlook. You’ll gain confidence. You will rock in whatever you decide to wear. Don’t pay one ounce of attention to negative comments. Everybody is different and everyBODY is different. The media has corrupted the idea of having a perfect woman body: size 2, C cup, 6 feet tall. Guys, Marilyn Monroe was a size 12, and she’s still considered the most beautiful woman. Barbra Streisand’s nose isn’t perfect, but she has the most beautiful Broadway voice every. Oprah Winfrey doesn’t look like a VS model, but she is most inspirational woman on earth. These women overflow with confidence. Brush it off, and walk down the street with your head held high.
